Starting at the gym as a newbie can be a nerve-wracking experience, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s important to remember that every person there was once a beginner too, and there are plenty of ways to make the transition into a gym-goer a smooth one.

Here are eight tips to help you get started in the gym:

1. Take a tour of the gym

Before starting your workout, take a tour of the gym to familiarise yourself with the layout of the place and where all the equipment is located. You can do this on your own or even better ask a member of staff to show you around. At any good gym, the staff will make you feel welcome and be more than happy to show you around and answer any questions that you have.

2. Go in with a plan

Knowing what exercises you want to do before you get to the gym will help a lot. Decide beforehand what you are going to do that day and take a written note or have it on your phone. You can watch some videos at home on how to perform the exercises before you go to the gym and save them so you have easy access to them again. This means you can pull them up if you need a quick reminder during your workout.

3. Start slow

Many people try to do too much too soon, get overwhelmed, and quit. There are no rules, so if you only feel comfortable with one or two exercises, then do those and leave. Getting better at even a couple of exercises will help you build confidence and keep you motivated.

4. Set realistic goals

It’s important to set goals that are achievable and realistic. Don’t expect to see dramatic changes overnight. Instead, focus on making progress each week, whether that means lifting slightly heavier weights, increasing the number of reps or sets, or simply feeling more confident in the gym.

5. Bring a friend

Going to the gym with a friend can help you feel a little less intimidated. It can also help you stay committed by giving you someone else to be accountable. This is a great way to make it a fun experience.

6. Be consistent

Consistency is key when it comes to achieving fitness goals. It’s better to start small and stick with it than to go all out for a week and then burn out. Aim to go to the gym regularly, even if it’s just for a short workout. Over time, you can increase the duration and intensity of your workouts.

7. Celebrate your successes

Take the time to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. Whether it’s reaching a new personal best or simply sticking to your workout plan for the week, acknowledging your achievements can help you stay focused on your goals.

8. Get yourself a coach

If you don’t feel comfortable enough to start training at the gym on your own, then hiring a coach for a few sessions can be a great way to help you gain confidence. They will teach you the correct form and can give you a plan to follow when you feel ready to go it alone. Plus, they can motivate you to push yourself beyond what you thought was possible.

In summary, starting at the gym as a newbie can be overwhelming, but with these tips, you can make it a positive experience. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, so be kind to yourself and stay committed. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can progress when you put in the work.
